STORY 4
More than friends, part I

Saturday, on the start of the afternoon.

The new acquired residence of the meisters, weapons and their magical cat was carrying its usual atmosphere. But today, the home was occupied only by Soul and Sahn, as the ladies decided to hang out with their girlfriends into a shopping frenzy.

This left them to their usual activity: video gaming.

Weeks had passed since Maka's birthday. Ever since then, the two weapons weren't very focused on anything in their doings with the exception of their jobs pumping their veins with adrenaline. It was obvious.

Sahn never saw Mariciel as girlfriend material. She was a sister to him. Yet the thought of having her as such lingered in his mind with the words, "What if" echoing in the distance. He never dared talking about it to her. Did he fear of messing the dear bond between him and his red-headed meister? It was strongly suggested.

Soul wasn't better on his situation with Maka. Not by a long shot. He has known her for a good deal of years now. And Spirit had finally stop "overprotecting" her daughter and acknowledged the young scythe as the "only" potential guy allowed in her life. Sure, he had given some thought about it. Through the years, she had grown beautiful. Very "cool", as he'd say. Even back in their younger years, he had thought of her as the coolest girl he'd ever known. But now, her charming looks and attractiveness were getting to him. Worse; he couldn't imagine a life without her around.

The boys sighed and shut down their DEATHSTATION 3 console after losing several times in a row. Clearly their minds weren't in the game. They just lay on the couch zooming into the darken TV screen laid in front of them.

The door bell rang an enchanting sound.

"'Wonder who that is?" Soul said.

Sahn came to get it. "We'll see." He opened the door. "Oh! Miss Marie! Professor Stein! What a surprise!"

"Hello everyone!" She said with cheerfulness in her voice.

"How's it going?" Stein said with his cigarette in his mouth.

"Hey there." Soul came to the door. "What brings you guys here?"

"Oh, Soul! Can't your old teacher visit you all?" She asked.

Sahn and Soul smiled awkwardly shaking their heads.

"I guess." He smiled. "Come on in."

The four of them gathered around a table sipping tea. Different topics were talked: from good old days back in the DMWA to Sahn and Mariciel's past, which was a little touchy considering the lost of his wife. Being very emotional, the hammer weapon squeezed Sahn into the greatest hug given to him of all-time. She was saddened about the life of this one before Death City, she the young man comforted and reassuring her that he was doing well. Nonetheless, good laughs were shared among them.

"So," Miss Marie said sipping her cup of tea. "Since the girls aren't here, how's it going with them?"

Miss Marie looked at the boys with cheerful, yet meaningful eyes. It was clear she meant on the relationship level.

"Well…" Soul started coughing. "You know, still partners, still best friends and all…"

"What?" She replied.

"Same here." Sahn said. "I mean-"

"That's not what I mean!" She said slamming the table. The cups of tea along the table shook violently. The boys' faces were quite surprised.

"Come on, Marie." Stein said putting his cigarette in the ashtray. "Calm down a little."

"No! You and Maka, along with you and Mariciel!" Her eyes suddenly became amazingly touched and wondered. "You were so wonderfully adorable together at that birthday party!"

"She is right about that." Stein added. The boys' faces took a surprised tone that said "What the Hell?" by Stein's recent comment. Since when was he interested into that sort of things?

"You two have wonderful ladies… and here you are still single." His chin rested in his palm and he gave his giant screw lodged in his head a few turns. "Maybe I should dissect you and see what is wrong? I'm sure I can fix it."

"No thank you!" The boys said in unison and in haste!

"Listen," Marie calmed down looking at the boys seriously. "I can't middle in your lives. But dare tell me on this night you didn't feeling anything. Especially you, Soul."

Soul's eyes widened at the remark. "Me? What gives?"

"The way you dance with her. Those eyes deep into hers. Are you seriously going to tell me you haven't felt anything that was higher than friendship?"

Clearly Miss Marie was VERY observant at that party. Yet Soul definitely knew about this certain "feeling" as his heart just raced recalling this moment.

"Oh, I sense a fast heartbeat." Stein said.

"Dude, you're creeping me out." Soul replied.

"Tell me something I don't know." Stein laughed.

"Well?" Marie embarked.

"It's… it's not that easy."

Miss Marie smiled at him. "But at least you're admitting there's something for her." She turned to Sahn. "I know you've lost a love of your own in the past. I apologize for that."

"It's okay, Miss Marie. I've moved on." Sahn smiled. "And today, I got a great family around me, so I'm good thanks to everyone."

"If that's the case, surely there's something for Mariciel in your heart, right?" she questioned.

"Well… she's always been there for me, no matter what."

"And is she girlfriend-material to you?"

"I…" Sahn's face blushed as a tomato to the thought. "I… don't know. I mean, she's beautiful! Any guy would love to have her! And…"

"Even you?" Marie asked. This time Sahn remained speechless, stuck on her question.

"Let me ask you this in another way you can easily understand." Stein turned his screw two turns. "What if Maka and Mariciel would have boyfriends? Boyfriends that weren't you. What would be your reaction?"

This put the lid on the boys.

Their meisters, for as long as they've known them, never actually had boyfriends. Mariciel always had Sahn around and never was interested in other men; Maka always hung out with Soul in the same way. But never had another man in their lives. What if they did find love? They both asked themselves. Jealousy, regret, sadness? So much more might be felt than these three emotions.

After teacher couple left, the weapons remained speechless with sighs for the next two hours.

"What do you think?" Sahn asked, finally breaking the ice. "About what they said?"

He hummed shrugging his shoulders. Sahn turned back to the blank TV screen.

"I can't lose her…" Soul finally said.

"Huh?" Sahn asked.

"She has the right to be happy, don't get me wrong. So if she dated a guy, it's her life, you know." He stopped for a few seconds. "But… not grabbing the chance to at least know what it's like to be with her? I think I'd feel uncool for the rest of my life…"

"I get you on that." Sahn replied. "Sure, I was married and Maelice will always be the love of my life, but…" Sahn reminisces Maka's birthday as he danced with his meister. "It did cross my mind, quite a lot actually. Me and Mariciel. She has her life and she deserves happiness, but…"

"You're at a point where being the only man in her life is what you need to be, right?"

"Yeah! I mean, not in a jealous way or something. But, another guy in her life than me…" He looked up to Soul attentive to his words. "Oh, man…"

"Yeah..." Soul said sighing. "That wake-up call from Ms. Marie and Professor Stein really did a number on us. So uncool…"

"Tell me about it…"

The front door opened. Soul and Sahn looked to see Blair along their meisters coming back from shopping. The three of them were carrying many bags and boxes and by the numbers of them, they must have gone on a frenzy.

Giggles were shared by the three young ladies. Apparently from their conversation, the three girls had met three young men from France that were "drop-dead gorgeous" as they kept saying. That topic didn't put happiness on the boys' faces.

The boys came to give them a hand putting their numerous packages on the ground.

"Some girls had fun today." Said Soul.

"Yeah!" Maka giggled. "We met some cute guys from 'Fraaance'! François, Carl and Benoit."

"Oh…" Soul said, slight feeling jealous. "You don't say…"

Mariciel was just as hyped as Maka and Blair. "Man, we should totally take them on their date, no?"

"Date?" Sahn asked with a little pitch of worry in his voice.

"Well, they invited us for brunch, but we still haven't answered them yet!"

"Oh, come on! I say we do it!" Blair encouraged them. She winked at Soul and Sahn. "I'm sure Soul and Sahn would encourage us to do so! Right guys?"

"That damn cat!" They both thought.

Now all of the attention directed itself to the weapons, thanks to the magical mischievous cat. Maka and Mariciel looked at them with questioning looks. The boys knew if they kept staying in silence, questions would crawl out of their meisters' mind which would fall on them right after.

"Of course!" Sahn said patting Mariciel's shoulder. He wore a fake smile. "I want you to be happy, so go have fun, okay?"

Soul shrugged his shoulders. "Hey, it's your lives, ladies. Go ahead and have a cool time." He showed a soft, yet weaken smile to Maka. The blond meister couldn't help but noticing something was wrong with it.

"See?" Blair exclaimed. But even her was surprised by their answers.

"Well, I'm going for a long jog!" Sahn said fake-smiling. "Don't wait up for me for dinner!"

"Don't you want to want to see what I bought you?" Mariciel asked him, but the flame sword hasted himself out before she could finished her sentence. A worried expression was seen on his face by the red-haired miss. Mariciel knew him since childhood and he knew that behavior was strange and unusual.

"Well, I'm going for a nap. Don't wait for me either for dinner." Soul walked past the girls. Maka also wanted to show something he bought for him, but he waved his hand mentioning, "for later."

"Oh, and Ms. Marie and Stein came to say hi." He said before disappearing into the basement.

Maka looked at the closed door leading downstairs. "Why do I have a feeling something's wrong with Soul?"

Mariciel kept looking at the window where she saw Sahn's face of distress like she thought. At her turn, she showed worry on her face.

"Mariciel?" Maka asked.

"You…" she said. "You don't think Sahn is jealous about those French guys, right?"

Maka looked at the door that Soul just went through. Her eyes were searching for answers, then went back to Mariciel's, narrowing each other's. On the other hand, Blair was giggling to herself; she knew something in the boys sparked and she couldn't wait to see the following of events.

"I know Sahn," said Mariciel with worry in his voice. "When he hides something from me, I know it right away. I'm going after him."

Maka nodded. Then the red-haired meister was gone. The scythe technician looked at Blair. "Do you think that… you know… Soul might be…?" She pointed the door.

Blair winked to her. Her eyes suddenly had a certain big-sister aura in them. "I think you should ask him."

"Soul?" Maka knocked at his door.

"What?"

"Can I come in?"

"Yeah, sure…" He replied with an uninterested tone.

Maka entered the scythe's room to see him on his bed, headphones around his neck spilling jazz music. Not everything was at the right place, but Soul had managed to become more organized and cleaner than in his teenage years.

Though she froze. Not because of his room, but rather because of what his upper body was wearing. Nothing.

Soul's body had accumulated a few scars over the years, including the one going across his chest, compliment of Crona when he was manipulated by his psychotic mother Medusa. But Soul was well-shaped, lean and carried and sculpted six-packs that honed well on him. The blond meister couldn't help but eat away this delicacy with her eyes. She has to bit her lower lips to snap herself back to reality. Yet, truth be said: she loved the way he looked.

"Would you please put on a shirt? Come on!" She turned her eyes away flushing!

Soul raised an eyebrow, and then shines his toothy classic grin. "My room, my rules. So, no."

"You're so annoying…" Maka sat on his bed putting all of her psychological power to focus her sight in his eyes, and not his chest. "Not napping?"

"I couldn't," he replied. "So what's up?"

"I wanted to show you the stuff I bought for you." She said sitting down on his bed.
Soul opened the carton box and saw a black shirt with a skull intertwined with intricate designs along with scythes and music notes in the back, something that defined as "coolest" by the look of his ruby-colored eyes; a pair of blue jeans that were a taint of dark red that matched his eyes; and a pair of SOULVERSE shoes.

Soul smiled his fangs at her. Maka smiled back, happy to see his usual smile. His eyes fixated on her and his face regained his emotionless, yet wondering expression. That girl, Maka. Something today made him aware of her importance in his life. He had found her cute back in their youth. Now, she was beautiful. Just beautiful. And thanks for his old teachers' recent visit, he just couldn't stop having her in his mind.

"Soul," Maka said. "if you don't like them, I can have them returned-"

"No!" He snapped back surprising her. "They're great! I love them! Thanks!" He put his new acquired shirt on.

"'Looks good on you!" Maka said reassured. "You seemed lost for a moment…"

Soul kept looking at her. Yes, she had the right to be with any other man than him if she wanted. Yet… in reality and deep down within him, he knew that'd annoy him. Perhaps even kill him.

"Maka…"

"What's wrong, Soul?" She noticed his unusual tone in his voice. She sat closer to him.

"Would… Would you like to go out in a date with me?"

"What?" Maka was blasted by Soul's question; he wanted to go out on a date… with her!
It wasn't as if that never happened. Soul and Maka were used to go out together for dinner or movie, etc. But the usual shenanigans and Maka Chops were always present. They were outings as friends, nothing more, nothing less.

But that was different. Maka never heard Soul actually used such words towards her. And she only knew one lousy way to respond to that.

"Very funny, Soul!" She said blushing, laughing and a tiny bit infuriated. "If you're trying to tease me, then good luck! I wasn't born yesterday!"

That remark got the young man's blood boiling. "Forget it! I knew this was a bad idea! Just go with that French dude if you like!" He was out of bed and slammed the door loudly enough to resonate outside. Maka was shocked at his reaction, still not believing that was going on.

Now furious, she exited his room to see him grumbling at the table. "What is wrong with you?"

"What? What's wrong with you?" Soul bit back in anger. "I'm asking you out and you think I'm lying or playing a game or something!"

"Oh, come on Soul!" She said with the same rage in her voice. "Me on a date with you? The only type you're interested in are girls like Blair! Your nosebleeds have proven that more than once!"

"So what? I'm not good enough for you, is that it? I can't ask you out because you think I might be playing you! I would have asked Blair out if I wanted her!"

"Then do it! Be my guest!" She waved her hand to the door upstairs.

"Why can't that thick brain of yours process that I want to take you out on a date? Is that so freaking hard for you?!"

"Because…!!" She stopped. Then a certain tone of low self-confidence was present in her voice. "I mean, look at me! I'm not THAT beautiful! Blair, Patty, Liz, Tsubaki, Mariciel, those are knockouts! And me, I'm… you want to date THAT?" she pointed herself with her hands.

Soul knew Maka always had that low self-confidence about her appearance. She always was as such in term of physical appearance. But truth be told, her friends were envious of her charm and innocence within her beauty; it was the kind of appearance that sparkled without makeup. She thought they were only saying that, but her appearance was a natural magnificence.  And Soul was the first to notice. All men could drool over a babe such as Blair, but Soul needed challenge in a girl. And Maka responded to that with a flying passing grade.

He walked to her slowly. His hand carefully took hers. "And what makes you think you're not beautiful? What makes you think I'd lie to you about that? And why in Hell's blazes would I play with your feelings in the first place? Cool guys like me don't do that."

Her frustration was subdued by the warmth felt by his hand following by a adorable timidity shown in her face.

She shrugged her shoulders.  "I… I'm not... that…" She looked straight in his red eyes timidly. "R-Really…?"

Soul smiled. "I won't lie Maka. I love those eyes of green mint because they are so innocent, yet so strong. It's cute on you. Your hair color reminds me of the warm beaches. And I find that very hot. And your personality: you can be an annoying bookwork, not fun at all and the list goes on…" Maka was about to Maka-chop him. "Yet you're determined, courageous, smart, strong, very caring and you never let down your friends. In my book, that's very cool."

Maka's face blushed wildly like a red apple freshly cultivated. It was the first time Soul actually admitted it all in front of her.

"And no offense," he continued. "I can't call you flat-chest anymore. You got serious boobs!" This deserved him a well-placed Maka-Chop. "Oww!! That was a compliment!"

"Keep your eyes elsewhere you perv!" She covered her chest with her arms.
Soul got up grunting, but smiling at the same time. "Listen, Maka," He was a serious and timid expression. "I've been thinking…"

"What?" She asked curiously.

"I mean… you know. A lot of guys would like to get with you. And you have every right to want to date one. I'm sure there's a good one among them waiting for you and all. I mean, you do what you want, right?"

"Um, okay?" She said, confused and raising her eyebrow.

"But…" Soul paused. "I came to realize that I might regret it sourly if I didn't try to get to..."

"To what Soul…?" Her heart pounced like a legion of elephants walking the earth.

He waved his hand. "Now I'm not confessing or anything! But… I've known you as one of my best friends and my meister. But there's a part of me that… might want to know you, Maka, for perhaps… something else. And I thought about asking you out on a date and…"

Maka's face had defined a new shape of red. Her weapon, one of her best friends was serious. He wanted to ask her out. More than that, she was discovering a new Soul she never saw in all of the years they've been together. Her heart was racing. Racing too wildly. But that feeling, it felt like she's been waiting for it for as long as since the day they met each other.

She looked at him. Soul was always that cool and confident man she'd used to see. Now, he looked like a high school boy talking to his secret crush. She couldn't stop thinking how adorable he was right now. Screw the French guys, she thought. Soul was still the coolest guy she ever met.

"So…" she finally said. "I'm cute to you?" She raised her eyes to him shyly.

Soul chuckled showing his small smile with his fangs. "You're beautiful, Maka."

Her eyes left his, but the shade of red on her face along with her innocent smile on her lips glowed brightly.

"Ask me again, please?" She said innocently. Soul sighed, but smiled to her plea.

"Maka, would you like to go out on a date with me?"

Her eyes locked with his. She knew now. He wasn't lying. And she likes how his serene smiling face looked at her.

"Yes. I'd love to, Soul."

"Great." Soul responded in his casual cool way." So, is Saturday good for you?"

"Yeah, sounds good to me."

"So, it's a date then." Soul scratched the back of his head. He let go of Maka's hand noticing he was still holding. "Sorry about that…"

"It's okay. I didn't mind, so… yeah." She smiled softly at him. "I'll prepare dinner, so… I'll let you take your nap then."

"I can give you a hand if you want."

"It's okay," she was still blushing. "Blair will lend me a hand."

"Cool. So… I'll see you later." He winked at her.

"Yeah, sure."

Both of them separated, but smiles of warmth didn't free from their lips. Soul laid on his bed and a big weight got off from his back. More than that, he finally was able to ask her out. The coolest girl he knew. Maka announced the news to Blair and she was overexcited for the young meister already talking about what to wear and good spots for dates. Maka had many guys asking her out around her; her beauty grew wildly near the end of her DMWA's school days. She turned them all down. Soul was different; he was actually nervous about it, which she found cute from him. But more than that, she had heard the things he liked about her and that pleased her beyond measures.

Three days was apart from Saturday and the two of them felt it was an eternity. But an eternity worth waiting for.
